What is an Espresso Martini Cocktail?

Some people like to say it's a cold caffeinated alcoholic drink made with espresso, coffee liqueur, vodka and a foamy top.

We like to call it "sophisticated little devil" — since it's a fancy strong cocktail, with both coffee and alcohol in it.

Instead of using sweet ingredients for flavour, the Espresso Martini cocktail uses coffee for its bitterness and a bit of liqueur for sweetness.

It’s so simple but so good at the same time! It simply shouldn’t be allowed to taste SO good. Come try it at Atithi!

What are the ingredients of an Espresso Martini?

Here's what you’ll need for one serving — I mean, if you've kept reading until here, you probably already know:

  • Espresso or cold brew coffee: ~30 ml or 1 oz
  • No espresso machine? Use cold brew concentrate or regular filter coffee. It might be milder in flavour and caffeine, and not as foamy, but it’ll be just as tasty.

TIP: The cocktail's flavour depends A LOT on it, so use one that you actually like and that is of good quality.

  • Vodka: ~45ml or 1.52 oz
  • Not a fan of vodka? Although not traditional, there are plenty of other options, like tequila, gin or rum for example.

  • Coffee liqueur: ~15 ml or 0.51 oz
  • If you have Kahlúa, use it! It has long been the standard bearer in Espresso Martinis — Made with 100% Arabica coffee beans and rum.

But it’s just one of many brands of coffee liqueur out there, so use whichever one you have or prefer.

  • Simple syrup: ~15ml or 0.5 oz (optional, but adds a nice touch)
You can even add cinnamon, cardamom, or any other spice that plays well with coffee.

As tastes can vary A LOT, if you prefer a less sweet and a more coffee-forward drink, skip this.

However, it balances out the other ingredients in this cocktail.

  • Ice
  • Garnish options: 3 coffee beans (because aesthetics matter)
  • If you don't want to use 3 coffee beans, then take a bean and crush it with your thumb and then sprinkle it on top of your drink.

You can also use ground coffee, or instant espresso.

    Equipment you will need:

  • Double Strain (because no one likes to chew ice)
  • Don't have a bar strainer? A sieve works fine as well.

  • Chilled cocktail or Martini Glass
  • Don't have those fancy glasses? No problem.

You can definitely go with whatever glass you have at home or coffee mug.

If not for aesthetics, it doesn’t matter! It's your drink and you drink it as you want. The taste remains the same.

  • Cocktail Shaker
  • Don't have one? Don't worry! A sports drink shaker will get the job done.

  • Weight scale or measuring cup
No scale or measuring cup? What you think we have a solution for this as well? ahah

Here all you can do just trust your eye and estimate the measurements.

How to make an espresso martini drink?

    1. Chill Your Ingredients & Glassware

Brew a fresh shot of espresso and let it cool to room temperature (or stick it in the fridge or freezer to speed up the process).

This will help prevent the ice from melting too fast when shaking, keeping the drink properly chilled and undiluted.

If you want to do it like a pro, you can also pre-chill your martini glass to keep your cocktail cool.

    2. Prepare the Cocktail

Next step is to fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice.

Add some vodka, coffee liqueur, chilled espresso (or cold brew), and simple syrup.

IMPORTANT: Do not add hot espresso to your cocktail, this is so that it does not melt the ice and dilute the drink.

    3. Shake It Until You Make It

Shake it well for about 15-20 seconds.

Once you’ve finished shaking, you should have lots of bubbles in your shaker.

The harder you shake, the smoother the foam on top will be.

    4. Pour into the glass

When pouring the liquid from your shaker into the glass, use a strainer. Otherwise you will be drinking ice with your cocktail.

    5. Garnish (optional) & Enjoy

And there you have it—the perfect Espresso Martini drink!

Once you pour it, then serve it right away.

For a classic look, add three coffee beans on top, and then serve it. You can also just crush a coffee bean or sprinkle ground coffee or instant espresso over the foam.

Pro Tip: If you use ground coffee or instant espresso, cover half the glass with paper before dusting coffee for a cool half-and-half design.
